Congratulations on starting on the ‘home run’ to retirement.

Leaving behind the hustle and bustle of the school corridors, the lesson planning and staff meetings can feel very appealing after many years teaching, but once the euphoria of escaping the classroom has passed, how will you fill your days?

Your teaching career has taken up a large part of your life, moving into retirement from a professional role surrounded by work colleagues (and rowdy children) can leave a large hole to fill.

Retirement doesn’t have to be a cliff edge event!

Now is the time to start giving some thought to the lifestyle you want in retirement.

Ask yourself –

Q

Do I have some immediate plans in mind?

A well earned holiday, perhaps a retirement party, or, as with many retirees, you could be considering downsizing your property and moving to a new home.

These plans could keep you busy for the early days of your retirement, but what about after the dust has settled – how will you spend your time?

Q

As well a organising my pension and finances, how do I prepare for my changing lifestyle?

Whilst organising your pension and finances is something you will need to do, having positive goals and plans will make it easier to adjust to the emotional and practical implications of your changing lifestyle.

Get into good habits and keep your mind and body healthy.

  • Think about participating in community activities, clubs and societies.
  • Take advantage of reduced ticket prices – ‘off peak’ offers or perhaps deals for the over 60’s: –
    • Museums
    • Galleries
    • Theatres & cinemas
    • Gardens
    • Leisure centres
    • Golf courses

You can even attend BBC and ITV shows free!

  • Develop new interests, take up a new hobby or re-visit an old one.
  • Volunteer – You have been using your skills and expertise for the benefit of others for many years, volunteering means you can continue to do this.
  • Does your union or professional body have a retired members section?

Get answers to your questions, use the resources available to you, and look forward to a fulfilling life after retirement. Here are some contacts you may find useful but you can find out more simply by searching online:–
